We all wish the doctor had handed us a pamphlet that said, ‘Hey… sorry about the autism, but here’s a step-by-step list on what to do next.’ But doctors don’t do that.
As parents with young children on the autism spectrum we can relate to how overwhelming your child’s diagnosis can feel. Finding resources and professional support can take days, if not weeks, depending on the amount of free time you have to research. It can be very difficult and time-consuming to find the right kind of support for your child, as each one of our children has their own challenges.
There has never been an all-in-one resource available for families in the Okanagan. Until now.
That’s why we have created a new parent-led, volunteer initiative called the “Okanagan Family Autism Connection”. Through this website we hope to build a community of support between parents and professionals. We have created a directory of local Resources and Professionals and step-by-step instructions on “what to do now?” Where to get help. Who to call on. What services and events are happening in the Okanagan? We’ve also set up a Facebook page and discussion forums where you can go to find other parents who “get it”, where you can post your own questions and help each other.
To get started, start exploring this web site. You can also join our email list to receive occasional reminders on upcoming events and new resources.
Finding your way through these tough times can be a lonely journey… but be reassured, you are not alone.
