The right brain, which communicates in images, is symbolic and emotional and can express what we actually feel. Creative expression is a great healer: it calms the mind, releases emotions and helps regulate the nervous system. It provides opportunities to outwardly manifest an individual’s imagination and originality.

CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS TOOL KIT
Sometimes the difficulties of autism can lead to behaviours that are quite challenging for us to understand and address. Most individuals with autism will display challenging behaviours of some sort at some point in their lives. Autism Speaks has created this Challenging Behaviours Tool Kit to provide you with strategies and resources to address these behaviours, and to help support you and your loved one with autism during these difficult situations.
The guiding principle used in developing this kit is that each individual with autism and his family should feel safe and supported, and live a healthy life filled with purpose, dignity, choices, and happiness. With this in mind, positive approaches and suggestions are highlighted throughout the kit. The general framework and intervention principles included are relevant at any stage of life, and we have included basic background information, with links to further information and resources on a variety of topics.
Oral health is a very important component of healthy daily living. But for some children with autism, oral health habits can be challenging. Autism Speaks has teamed up with Colgate and Philips-Sonicare to create a dental guide and video to provide tips for improving oral hygiene at home, as well as information about how parents and dental professionals can make a visit to the dentist’s office less stressful and more productive. Our hope is that this guide will provide information for families to help begin a lifetime of good oral care.
FAMILY & FRIENDS SUPPORT TOOL KIT
Family members and friends of individuals with autism are presented with many joys and many challenges throughout their lives. Learning that a family member or friend is affected by autism is a powerful moment. People respond with a wide array of emotions: shock, grief, fear, denial, anger, acceptance, and many more. Many begin to feel their lives will never be the same. Parents can feel overwhelmed, siblings can feel isolated, grandparents can feel helpless, and friends can feel apprehensive.
In an effort to ease the fears of and provide encouragement to all people with individuals with autism in their lives, Autism Speaks has created 4 support tool kits, each designed specifically for the following groups:
Parents Siblings Grandparents Friends
The purpose of each kit is to help teach family members and friends more about autism and its effects on families, and provide resources and support to enable them to lead happy and successful lives with their loved ones with autism.
