The Powder Hounds Adaptive Ski Club at Big White
(348 volunteer ski days for the 11/12 ski season)
Powderhounds is a program offering unique skiing and recreation opportunities for physically and sensory challenged individuals. Founded in 1996, we operate from our facilities at the Big White Mountain Resort as a program of The Kelowna & District Society People in Motion a non-profit agency.
Our Mission: The Kelowna & District Society for People in Motion is dedicated to the inclusion and equality of children and adults with disabilities throughout the city of Kelowna, the Okanagan Valley and visitors from around the world. People in Motion promotes its mission of inclusion by developing and sponsoring programs, services, and advocacy efforts on behalf of, and with, people with disabilities.
The PowderHounds provide integrated recreational opportunities for people with disabilities that foster independence through the acquisition of lifetime skills.
We serve people with disabilities with instructional programs in adaptive Alpine skiing, which include downhill Sit-Ski, Mono-Ski and Bi-Ski as well as 3-track and 4-track instruction. Seventy- five percent of our member clients come from the Okanagan Valley. We have experienced a modest, but continuous, growth over the past 10 years. Powderhounds started with just a handful of skiers with a disability and 3 volunteer instructors. A scholarship fund is being instituted so we can accommodate participants from all income levels. The participants who partake in Powderhounds have special needs that cannot be met by traditional teaching methods. The students not only enjoy all the wondrous thrills of skiing, but also feel the pride and satisfaction of accomplishment. They also acquire an alliance with fellow athletes and volunteers, enhancing their lives physically and emotionally.

Kelowna’s Kids In Action program began in the spring of 2000, as one of two outreach pilot projects in community recreation by the occupational therapists at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in Vancouver.
These therapists wanted to find out what kinds of home community recreational activities were available to children with disabilities, once they were discharged from inpatient rehabilitation therapy at Sunny Hill.
The compassion & high caliber of Kids In Action’s leaders is another reason for its success.
Here’s how the process works:
Kids In Action recognizes an unmet recreational need for a particular child with disabilities;
Kids In Action finds a similar existing activity or program, and works to integrate the child into it; If nothing appropriate exists, then Kids In Action looks for a community leader to start a new program.
The City of Kelowna generously contributes to Kids In Action, by providing its excellent recreational facilities gratis.
In 2003, Kelowna hosted the BC Disability Games, including the new international sport of Powerchair Football (known as Soccer in North America). Then & there, People In Motion’s Okanagan Thunderchairs soccer team was born.
For some time now, Kids In Action has been a program of People In Motion. Each spring, Kids In Action organizes the Disability Sport Awareness & Demonstration Day.
Volunteers from other People In Motion programs provide demonstrations:
The players and coaches on the Okanagan Thunderchairs soccer team demonstrate the sport of Powerchair Football (Soccer);
The members of the PowderHounds Adaptive Ski & Snowboard Club demonstrate some of their specialized equipment of sit‐skis, bi‐skis, mono‐skis, adaptive snowboards, tethers, etc. and hold a Disability Awareness workshop each fall.
Community Recreation Initiatives Society (CRIS) staff demonstrate their equipment & programs in:
Cycling, employing tandem bicycles & tricycles;
Paddling, using kayaks on Okanagan Lake; and
Hiking, with Trailriders invented right here in BC.
Kids In Action is currently attempting to meet the caregiver needs of this community, by offering Disability Awareness Training at sites where caregivers work.
PIM membership fee is only $10/year.

PLAN OKANAGAN is a family directed, non-profit charitable organization. We support families to develop a safe, secure and quality future for their family member with a disability. To accomplish this, we provide information sessions, future planning consultations and assist in the development of a social and supportive network for your family member with a disability.
For those who have a child or relative with a disability and are asking yourself the real and pressing question, “Who will take care of my loved one with a disability when I’m gone?” , you have found the organization, that began 22 years ago, asking that very question. The founding families went on to search and discover solutions to secure a good life for their loved ones; in the process they gained peace of mind
